Trichosanthin decoction has certain inhibitory effect on hemolytic streptococcus, dicoccus pneumoniae and Bacillus diphtheria in 
vitro, but has weak effect on bacillus typhoid, Bacillus aeruginosa, bacillus dysentery, Bacillus proteus and Staphylococcus aureus, Radix trichosanthis. The inhibitory effects of trichosanthin on 7 kinds of viruses were determined by lesion inhibition and 125I radioimmunoassay in 3 cell culture systems. The results showed that trichosanthin had no obvious toxic effect on cells when the concentration was below 10ug/ mL, but had obvious inhibitory effect on Japanese encephalitis, Coxsackie B2, measles, adenovirus 3 herpes simplex virus TYPE I, vesicular stomatitis virus and hepatitis B virus when the concentration was between 0.001-10ug/ mL. The inhibitory effect was increased with the increase of the concentration of asparagine. When the concentration was 0.01ug/ml, it could inhibit 50% of cytopathic effects caused by intradermal injection of 50 virus 100TC. It suggested that trichosanthin might be another protein with broad spectrum anti-toxicity after interferon.
In vitro experiments showed that trichosanthin could inhibit the replication of HIV in infected immune cells and reduce the number of living cells infected by the virus in the immune cells. The effective inhibitory concentration was 0.05-10ug/ mL. An egg that inhibits HIV infection and replication is called anti-hivta29. Clinical data also showed that it had a certain therapeutic effect.
Side effects and toxicity: female dogs were given intramuscular injection of trichosanthin, usually lethargy, loss of appetite, and even anorexia. The dose was 0.2-2mg/kg. The side effects were recovered after 3-5 days, but most of the patients with 3-4mg/kg died after 1-2 weeks. The total number of white blood cells in treated dogs increased by 30,000-40,000 /mm3. Neutrophil percentage can be increased to 90%, generally reduced to normal after 1 week; Ecg observation showed that the temporary ST segment decreased in 0.2-2mg/kg group, which recovered after 2-3 days. In the 3-4mg/kg group, ST segment decreased gradually with the course of disease, and the T wave inverted obviously, and premature beats appeared in a few cases. The SGPT and NPNl increased significantly and reached about 200mg/kg at 3-4mg/kg dose. Meanwhile, blood sodium and blood chlorine decreased, blood potassium increased and CO2 binding ability decreased, presenting metabolic acidosis. Pathological examination showed systemic telangiectasis and congestion of capillaries and venules, mild degeneration of liver and kidney substantive cells in 0.2-2mg/kg group, multiple organ hemorrhagic spots and large necrosis of renal proximal curved tubules in 3-4mg/kg group, and some small focal necrosis of liver parenchymal cells.
