Phellodendron amurense and its Medicinal use

Phellodendron amurense (scientific name: Phellodendron amurense) is a Rutaceae plant, commonly known as Phellodendron amurense.It is the main source of huángbò (Chinese: Huang Ke or Huang Hui), one of the 50 essential herbs used in Chinese medicine.The Ainu people used the plant called shikerebe-ni as a pain reliever.It is called hwangbyeok in Korean and (キハド) kihada in Japanese.Native to East Asia: North China, Northeast China, Korea, Ussuri, Amur, and Japan, Amur tie tree is considered an invasive species in many parts of North America. Massachusetts lists it as a noxious weed.

Medicinal use 

It has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for meningitis, bacillary dysentery, pneumonia, tuberculosis, tumors, jaundice, and liver cirrhosis.Orally used to treat abdominal pain, diarrhea, gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections.Phellodendron protects cartilage from osteoarthritis progression.It may prove to be a potentially important chemopreventive agent for lung cancer.Phellodendron Phellodendron is able to inhibit the contraction of the prostate gland, suggesting that it may be useful in treating urinary disorders caused by obstruction of the prostatic urethra, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Nexrutine (extract from the bark of Phellodendron amurense) may have the potential to prevent the development of prostate tumors.Compounds in leaves (quercetin, quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-β-D-galactoside, and kaempferol-3-O-β-D -glucoside) exhibited significant free radical scavenging activity of vitamin E.The tree has antibiotic and antibacterial properties due to the alkaloids contained in the plant material.The main chemical constituents of its bark are isoquinoline alkaloids, palmitine, jatrorrhizine, phellodine, and berberine found in the leaves.Indole alkaloids have also been found in the roots of young dioecious trees.Dye extracted from the bark was historically used throughout East Asia to color the paper of Buddhist scriptures and other documents, including the Diamond Sutra.
