Licorice has an adrenocorticosteroid like effect. It can inhibit hypersecretion of gastric acid induced by histamine. It also has the function of anti - acid and relieving spasm of gastrointestinal smooth muscle. Glycyrrhiza flavone, glycyrrhiza extract and glycyrrhetinic acid all have obvious antitussive effect.
